Day 17

Sorry about being a day behind, I was wiped after our time at Little Turtle and needed to rest up. Here's the post that should have ran yesterday.

Start off with some quiet time with the Living God- five minutes of silence before Him.

Speaking of Prayer, let's check out some of Jesus' teachings on prayer. Got to Luke 10:38-42 and Luke 11:1-13.

  1. What were the two different responses from Mary and Martha?

  2. What does Martha ask Jesus to do and what is his response?

  3. Take a moment to reflect on this account. What do you think the "one thing" is that Jesus is referring to? Be sure to look at the stories before and after this account for any clues.

  4. Let's switch gears to Luke 11:1-13. What is Jesus doing when his disciples ask him to teach them to pray? Does it seem strange that they would ask him to teach them how to pray? Does that suggest that there is a right and wrong way to pray? Has anyone ever taught you how to pray?

  5. What questions would you have for someone if you wanted to learn how to pray?

  6. What stands out to you about the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples? Write verses 2-4 in your own words.
  7. What are the two stories Jesus tells to teach about prayer?
  8. What stands out to you about the character of the Living God from these two stories?
  9. What is it that the Living God promises to give us if we ask him?
  10. If you could ask Jesus any question about prayer, what would you ask him?

That's it for this entry. Take some time to ask Jesus to teach you the answer to your question about prayer.

Peace

Richard

1) Mary wanted to sit and listen to Jesus while Martha was working to get everything prepared. Martha was mad at Mary for doing nothing to help out.
2) Martha asked him, "Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me?"
3) Jesus was praying and he got asked right after he finished.
4) No because he is the Son of the Father and so he knows how to pray. He is here to teach the people so they know that and can follow his examples.
5) No
6) Yes I got taught to pray in Sunday School and from my parents.
7) I would ask them just the method or the way they pray because I always don't know what to say.
8) It stands out(the first few verses of the pray) because it is similar to the Lord's Prayer.
9) Dad,
sacred be your name
your heaven, earth, and the world be your name
give us ypur day our daily food
forgive our mistakes
just as we forgive everyone that makes mistakes against us
and guide us not into wrong
10) Jesus tells us that we need to help others when they knock or when they are in need. For example if they need food or help
11) It tells me that he was very helpful to everyone when they were in need and wants us to do the same
12) The Holy SPirit

1. Martha was just getting all worked up and nervously preparing things just because Jesus was there and she wanted the best for him. Mary just sat and listened to Jesus speak.

2. Martha asked Jesus to tell Mary to come and help her clean around and Jesus said: "You are worried about too many things and only one is necessary. Mary has chosen the best and it will not be taken away from her."

3. I think that the one thing was exactly him being there and Martha having her chance to listen but she was too busy worrying.

4. Jesus had just finished praying when the disciples asked him to teach them. I do think it is kind of strange because they were already learning. I think that is just giving the basics on how to pray but there is no wrong way of praying.

5. I would ask them how too keep away from using awkward wording, that doesn't always come out the way you meant it to be.

6. What stands out to me is how different it is from the Lord's prayer I have learned, which is what it is.
In my words: Dad, help us to honor you. Please bring your ruling here. Please give us all of the food we need everyday. Forgive us, just how we forgive the people who make us mad. Please keep me from doing bad things that tempt me.

7. a. Fathers giving children a snake to eat instead of a fish.
b. People giving children a scorpion instead of and egg.

8. What stands out to me about him is his willingness to give to people.

9. He promises us that all who ask shall receive, everyone who searches shall find, and for everyone who knocks on a door, the door will be opened.

10. Refer to my answer for question 5.
